No matter how good the email content is, a weak subject line means it never gets read. Here are formulas that consistently perform well across industries.
Curiosity-Gap Formulas
- “The mistake most [audience] make with [topic]”
- “Why [common belief] is wrong”
- “What nobody tells you about [topic]”
Direct-Benefit Formulas
- “[Specific result] in [specific timeframe]”
- “How to [achieve outcome] without [common pain point]”
Urgency and Scarcity (Used Honestly)
- “Ends tonight: [offer]”
- “Only [X] left”
- “Last chance for [specific benefit]”
Personal and Conversational
- “Quick question, [first name]”
- “Can I ask you something?”
- “This might not be for you…”
What to Avoid
- ALL CAPS or excessive punctuation (!!!) — these trigger spam filters and reduce trust
- Misleading subject lines that don’t match the email content — this destroys trust and increases unsubscribes
- Generic subject lines like “Newsletter #12” with no reason to open
Testing Your Own
Split-test two subject line styles on a portion of your list before sending to everyone — most email platforms support this natively, and it removes the guesswork over time.
